Essence of the tests for corrosion

Corrosive tests are the researches detecting ability of a metal to resist corrosive impact of the environment.

Under the tests of the protective compositions they mean assessment of their ability to prevent destruction of the metal elements as affected by the aggressive climatic factors.




The corrosive tests are divided into longterm and accelerated ones. The latter enable to identify the anti-corrosive properties of greases and coatings, tendency of the constructive materials to forming corrosion within a relatively short while.

Reduction of the research terms is achieved due to intensification of the aggressive factors influence such as relative humidity, temperature, moisture condensation, corroding agents.


Equipment to hold the tests

The accelerated tests for corrosion resistance are held in the special test chambers. Aggressive environment such as salt mist, acid mist, alkali mist that are selected on the base of the operating features of the items in the future are artificially created in them. For example, salt mist enables for recreate and intensify the conditions typical for sea climate.

The test in mist are the most suitable to testing and comparing the properties of the protective compounds, such researches results are used with caution in practice.

To gain the results as close to the real life conditions as possible, the cyclic corrosion chambers are used. The modes of increased humidity, drying, and salt mist replace one another within the closed space.

Stages of tests holding

Each test for corrosion at the MODENGY Engineering Center is performed according to an individually developed plan that takes into account operation goals, and functioning conditions of the units and materials. The following general stages of holding the tests are possible to be distinguished.

Stages of the accelerated tests for resistance to corrosion:

  • Collecting the data to make a technical specification
  • Developing the experiment plan, selecting the optimal research method
  • Preparing the samples for the test – at this stage, the part surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and degreased, all the surface defects are registered, the anticorrosive protection agents are applied
  • Placing the samples into the chamber
  • Periodical controlling state of the samples according to the graph, registering the changes
  • Analysis of the gained results and making report
  • Transferring all rights for the information presented in the report documents to the customer

The optimal researches are considered those lasting for 24, 48, 96, 240, 720, and 1,000 hours.



The accelerated tests for resistance towards corrosion enable to predict the service lifetime of the parts and mechanisms on the stage of designing them, to select the constructional materials and protective compounds the most suitable for the certain operational conditions.
