Introduction
Tribotechnical performances of contacting surfaces play a significant role in the modern units of the pipeline valves as well as in the conjugate mechanisms of oil-and-gas and energy equipment. It is especially relevant for the metal-to-metal and metal-to-polymer friction pairs where there are requirements towards reducing friction coefficient, increasing wear resistance, and providing corrosion resistance at the same time.
Operational practice shows that friction units are exactly what often becomes the limiting factor of equipment reliability. However, traditional approaches do not always provide stability of the performances under conditions of changing loads, exposure to moisture, aggressive media, and long downtimes.
In this regard, the anti-friction solid-film coatings are of particular interest as they enable to form a functional layer with specified properties on the surfaces of the parts (see

The Modengy company has designed MODENGY 1039 coating oriented on solving a set of the specified tasks.
Functional properties of MODENGY 1039 coating in friction units
MODENGY 1039 coating is designed on basis of polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) with use of organic binder and a set of functional additives.
This product has increased hardness which ensures it resistance to abrasive wear under conditions of intense mechanical effect.
In a metal-to-metal friction pair, friction coefficient is about 0.05 to 0.07, and in a metal-to-polymer pair is makes 0.07 to 0.10 (according to ASTM G99 Standard). Besides, the coating retains its operability within temperature range between -100 and +250 °С.
The layer formed on the surface has marked hydrophobic properties what prevents it from wetting with water (see Fig. 2) as well as provides anti-adhesive effect that prevents deposits from sticking on.

Improving performances of the units containing steel-to-plastic pairs became the key direction in developing
Figure 3 – Tribotechnical tests for MODENGY 1039 coating in steel-to-plastic friction pairs
Due to forming the anti-friction layer, more predictable operating of the mechanisms is provided including reducing starting forces after long downtime.
The practical results of using the coating are extent of the service lifetime of the friction units, and decreased probability of failures.
Protective properties in aggressive environments
MODENGY 1039 coating demonstrates high resistance to impacts of moisture and aggressive environments. The formed hydrophobic surface prevents water from holding, and thus, decreases risk of corrosion.
The accelerated tests according to the international ISO 9227 Standard confirm efficiency of the coating in action: 950 hours under conditions of neutral salt mist.

MODENGY 1039 is used in bearings and slide guideways, threaded connections, sealing units, gears, elements of pipeline systems (see Fig. 4).
Besides the operational features, this coating has additional functional properties.
Color modification of the coating
A distinctive feature of MODENGY 1039 is possibility to make it in different colors without deterioration of its performances. The ordinal color of the coating without coloring is mate black.
Color differentiation enables to implement visual identification of the parts, to make assembly and maintenance of the equipment easier as well as to introduce marking systems into mass production.
Technological aspects of applying
The coating is applied by the method of spraying out with following thermal curing (see Fig. 5). Quality of surface preparation has a key effect on adhesion and durability of the coating.
Figure 5 – Applying MODENGY 1039 coating by the method of spraying out
To clear and disgrace the surfaces, it is recommended to use MODENGY Special Cleaner-Activator. If there are severe contaminations and small defects, chemical or mechanical treatment ways (micro-sandblast cleaning, for example) will help improve cohesion.
The applying technology is adapted for industrial use and can be integrated into existing production processes.
Conclusion
MODENGY 1039 anti-friction coating is an integrated solution to improve reliability and to extend service lifetime of the friction units in the industrial equipment operating under conditions of changing loads and aggressive environments.
Combination of low friction coefficient, high wear resistance, anti-corrosive and anti-adhesive properties enables to significantly increase operational features of the equipment. The additional advantage is a possibility of color identification expanding functionality of the coating.
