Ball supports. Extending service lifetime and reliability of a unit with MODENGY coatings

The most important element of the suspension which the designers and engineers pay significant attention to while designing a car is a ball support. One of its major components is a ball pin. Its performances are exactly what identifies reliability and durability of the ball support.

Major causes of the ball pin wear:

The ball pin is exposed to intensive wear when…

  • friction increases caused by washing the grease off the spherical head's surface
  • spherical head geometry gets broken due to its wear
  • stick-slip motions occur
  • corrosion occurs

MODENGY coating for ball supports

MODENGY 1014 anti-friction solid-film coating based on polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) and molybdenum disulfide is used for the ball pin made of constructive alloyed steel.

The coating is applied by centrifuging or spraying methods in two layers with a break after each one for drying. The final layer’s thickness must make 20 to 25 µm.

Apart of PTFE, MODENGY 1014 also contains molybdenum disulfide, a solid lubricating material with a layered crystal structure. Due to this, the coating has enhanced antiseizure properties, and a distinctive grey colour (see Fig.1).

Typical features of the coating:

  • Service temperatures range: -75... +255 °С
  • Load carrying capacity (SRV test): 2700 MPa
  • Corrosion protection (test in salt mist): >672 h
  • Cure temperature and time: +200 °С, 40 minutes

MODENGY PTFE-A20 coating is applied onto thread of the ball pins to prevent its sticking and ‘galling’ at mounting-dismantling (Fig.2). This product provides additional corrosion protection for the parts.

Conclusion

MODENGY 1014 coating has a number of advantages over conventional lubricating materials:

  • Low friction coefficent
  • Chemical resistance
  • Wide service temperatures range
  • Workability in dusty environment
  • High adhesion
  • Non-toxicity after curing
  • Separating properties
  • Long service lifetime (depending on the unit construction – provides durable lubrication)
  • High anticorrosive properties (>672 hours, according to the results of the accelerated tests in salt mist)

Use of MODENGY 1014 coating on the ball pin provides smooth motion of the unit, enables to reduce friction and to prevent jamming. Due to a set of the referred advantages, the coating significantly extends service lifetime of the ball support.

Earlier, the materials similar to MODENGY 1014 were produced and used abroad only. The Modengy company has launched release of the solid-film coatings according its own formulas in Russia. Today, they have become available to the Russian enterprises.
