Tests Purpose

Detecting corrosion resistance of the threaded connections treated with the coatings system: MODENGY 1076 as a base coating, and MODENGY 1032 as a top coating.


Tests Conditions

These tests are held according to the Corrosion Tests in Artificial Atmospheres - Salt Spray Tests. ISO 9227 standard at exposing to neutral salt mist.


Equipment

Salt mist chamber, 1001A-PLC Model (see Fig.1).


Samples for Tests

As a sample to apply the coatings on it the following items were prepared – a M12x80 bolt of 5.8 strength class with a M12 nut screwed on it.

Parts surface preparation prior applying the coatings included sandblasting, degreasing, and surface activating with MODENGY Special Cleaner-Activator. After the surface preparation, a two-layer coating consisting of MODENGY 1076 coating as a base layer, and MODENGY 1032 coating as a top layer, was applied. The thickness of each layer made 7 to 9 µm. The procedure of applying was holding according to the coatings producer’s instructions by spraying method.

The sample was placed into the salt mist chamber, and photo of its state was taken every 24 hours during a period of 1,001 hours.

Tests Results

The tests results are presented in Table 1.

Conclusion

Visible red corrosion attack centers on the head and thread of the bolt have been detected at the next in turn examination of the parts in 952 hours from the tests start.

No signs of the red corrosion have appeared on the nut screwed on the bolt even after the whole tests time of 1,001 hours.

Thus, protective propertied of the coating system under testing make at least 900 hours, according to the results of the accelerated tests according to the Corrosion Tests in Artificial Atmospheres - Salt Spray Tests ISO 9227 standard.

The results of photofixation of the samples state during the tests are presented in Appendix 1.
