Features of using anti-friction solid-film coatings to increase service lifetime of pneumatic systems

Application fields of pneumatic cylinders

Pneumatic cylinders are used for the purpose of transferring force and creating linear motion in the automated systems in order to control moving various devices and mechanisms.

The pneumatic systems are applied in many industries, in particular, they provide optimal functioning of the pipeline equipment. Due to implementing them, remote control over the fittings, quick and accurate opening and closing the valves, shutters, and other elements are provided.

These devices have simple structure, they can operate under different conditions including aggressive media, and high temperatures.

A pneumatic system consists of a cylinder, a piston, a metal rod, tightening studs, and sealing elements. A bushing which is often made of anodized aluminum serves as a part body (See Fig.1).

Choice of the material to produce pneumatic systems cylinders is based on their operation features, and interacting surfaces friction. They must have enough strength to withstand heavy loads raising at the device functioning. Taking into account existing friction, these parts must be wear-resistant as well as resistant to corrosion and aggressive media.

The internal surfaces of the metal bushings undergo thorough treatment. It is necessary to achieve cleanness, smoothness, and to prevent stick-slip motion of the conjugate elements.

Specific treatment methods help improve material structure inside the bushing increasing its strength and resistance towards different loads.

Proper operating and control over performance of the pneumatic cylinder elements enable to achieve and provide tightness of the connection, and to extend service lifetime of the equipment.

Anti-friction solid-film coatings for pneumatic cylinders

In order to extend service lifetime of the equipment, to protect metal items against corrosive attack as well as to reduce friction and wear, anti-friction solid-film coatings having high protective and lubricating properties are applied onto the parts surfaces.

MODENGY 1014 coating is effective when it is used on the internal and external surfaces of the pneumatic cylinders for their reliable and long-term operation (See Fig.2).

MODENGY 1014 Anti-friction Solid-film Coating

Figure 2 – MODENGY 1014 Anti-friction Solid-film Coating

This product contains polytetrafluorethylene and molybdenum disulfide solid lubricating particles in its composition which enables to effectively use it both in the metal-to-polymer friction pairs, and the metal-to-metal friction pairs.

Performances of MODENGY 1014 anti-friction solid-film coating are:

  • Low and stable friction coefficient
  • High anti-corrosive properties (more than 672 hours, according to the results of the accelerated tests in the neutral salt mist, according to ISO 9227 Standard)
  • Resistance to chemical impacts
  • Wide service temperature range (-75…+255 ℃)
  • High separating properties
  • Long-term service lifetime

MODENGY 1014 coating having been applied onto the internal part of the pneumatic cylinder bushing forms an even and smooth layer that effectively reduces friction of the contacting surfaces, and effort for the movement starting moment as well as prevents stick-slip motion (See Fig.3). This product provides stable and low friction coefficient even at losing sealing elements elasticity.

Use of MODENGY 1014 on the external part of the bushing enables to protect the parts against corrosion forming, and impact of the adverse outer factors, and at the same time providing a pleasant aesthetic appearance of the item.

The parts treated with the coating are completely ready to be used as soon as they have polymerized in a kiln during 40 minutes at +200 ℃ from the moment the part gets heated. If it is needed to extend service lifetime and anti-corrosive properties, an additional treatment of the surfaces should be done, for instance, by the method of phosphating.

Difference between anti-friction solid-film coatings and lubricating materials of other types

Anti-friction solid-film coatings have high resistance to wear and, due to their dry texture, they don’t contribute to abrasive particles sticking. They are capable to reduce friction improving operational efficiency of the industrial equipment units.

Unlike liquid lubricants and greases, the anti-friction coating accumulates no dust, have higher anti-corrosive properties, and longer service lifetime. They demonstrate positive application results at high loads, contact pressures, and temperatures.

In addition, the anti-friction solid-film coatings are more effective at operating under exposure to the chemically aggressive media. In particular, MODENGY 1014 coating is characterized by high chemical resistance due to which application of it is common in the units of the pipeline fittings as well.

High protective properties, and chemical resistance of this product were proved multiple times by the results of the full-scale tests on the pneumatic systems parts. According to GOST 9.403-80, the pneumatic system parts made of aluminum alloy treated with MODENGY 1014 was places into the atmosphere of hydrochloric acid at +20 (± 2) °С at the total tightness of the container being provided. After those tests, the part surface remained smooth, no damages were registered found on it.

Besides this, due to its separative properties, MODENGY 1014 helps solve the issue of polymer sealants sticking to the pneumatic cylinder walls keeping the drive elements in the working state for a long while, and providing unimpeded movement of the cylinder rod (See Fig. 4).

The coating is applied just once on the stage of the parts production by the method of spraying out of the specific equipment onto the preliminary prepared surface, and it can operate for the whole service lifetime of the pneumatic system while the greases require renewal.

MODENGY 1014 is compatible with other types lubricating materials, and using the coating together with a grease give synergetic effect.

So, due to content of the finely dispersed particles of solid lubricating substances, the anti-friction solid-film coatings have a number of advantages over the other kinds lubricants. At applying onto the metal surfaces, they are forming an elastic layer of a protective film that has increased resistance to washing out, scuffing, and aging.

These materials keep their protective and lubricating properties under conditions of high dustiness, extreme temperatures, and high contact pressures.

MODENGY coatings are effectively used in many pipeline fitting units: they reduce valve rods shutter drive effort, prevent scores on the rack gearings from forming, protect fastening elements against corrosion, etc.
