Restoring Teflon coating on the packing machines’ parts. MODENGY solutions

The goods package quality depends directly on equipment state. Selection of the materials used to protect heating end-soldering elements, as well as guideways of the packing-and-filling machines plays an important role here.

Common silicone greases don’t fit for these purposes as they burn out, are washed out, and require regular replacement.

The optimal solution is using MODENGY anti-friction solid-film coatings.

They are used to restore the Teflon coatings which some manufacturers apply onto the parts of the packaging machines, as well as to create a new protective layer on them.

Let’s consider what elements of the packaging equipment MODENGY products are used for, and what issues it enable to eliminate.

Typical issues at operating packaging machines

One of the major working elements of the end soldering machines is a knife. End-soldering matrixes are used in this equipment to solder the film edges after putting the items into their containers. The filling-and-packaging devices are equipped with guideways (so called “sleeve-forming collars“) which the film is sliding along.

The knives (see Fig. 1) and the matrixes are exposed to high temperatures, and can be subjected to corrosion. The melted film sticks to the edge-soldering element working surfaces. Unless they get cleaned in time, packaging quality decreases while the parts wear out before their estimated service lifetime.

Due to high friction coefficient, the film crumpling happens on the surface of the sleeve-forming collars, and the edge-soldered seam of the package diverges. It leads to increasing the defective packaging percentage.

The entire line has to be stopped to clean the knives, the soldering jaws, to lubricate the guideways. The packaging machines repairs requires the same measures but for a longer term. Due to the forced downtime, production volume decreases, and the enterprises incur financial losses.

In order to protect heating elements against film sticking, and to improve its sliding along the collars, the packaging machines parts are treated with Teflon coating taped around with the Teflon tape.

The latter method cannot be called quite convenient and technically simple. The tape costs a lot but doesn’t serve for long. The process of cutting it out and then sticking it on is rather labor-intensive one.

The Teflon coating is applied at the plant where the filling-and-packaging machines are manufactured. Its estimated service lifetime is supposed to be equal to the service lifetime of the treated parts. However, practice reveals that it is not like this in the real life. The protective layer damages at the first overheating or careless cleaning (see Fig.2).

Teflon coating restoring is obligatory point at repairs of edge-packagers. If it was excluded out of the scheduled works list, the issues of film sticking and crumpling can get worse.

MODENGY non-sticking solid-film coatings are the best alternative to the liquid Teflon or Teflon tape. They withstand higher temperatures (up to +350°С), resistant to mechanical and chemical effects.

Such coatings retain strongly on the surface, operate as long and efficient as possible. At the same time, they are easy to use as they are applied by using standard painting methods.

MODENGY non-sticking and anti-adhesive coatings

The product line of non-sticking and anti-adhesive compounds includes MODENGY 1007, MODENGY 1014 and MODENGY PTFE-A20 coatings.

MODENGY 1007 non-sticking coating prevents sticking packs and film onto the edge-soldering knives. It is resistant to external overheats (up to +350 °С) as well as to aggressive substances that’s why it doesn’t damage being exposed to aggressive detergents. It’s enough to apply this product just once to provide knives failure-free operating for a long while.

MODENGY PTFE-A20 coating is used for guiding collars of the filling-and-packaging machines. Due to polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE), its major component, it effectively reduces friction and improves packaging film sliding along the collars surfaces.

Translucent coating doesn’t spoil the parts appearance, is easy to spray out of an aerosol can, and cures at room temperature within 20 minutes.

MODENGY 1007 and MODENGY 1014 coatings are applied onto the edge-soldering matrixes. The non-sticking layer to be created prevents film sticking onto the elements which decreases the defective items percentage at item packaging as down as possible, and extends equipment service lifetime.

MODENGY 1014 based on PTFE and molybdenum disulfide is resistant to high temperatures (up to +255 °С), is remarkable for its high anticorrosive properties (more than 672 hours, according to results of accelerated test in salt mist).

All the materials listed above are non-toxic as soon as cured.

Restoring non-sticking coating or creating a new protective layer with MODENGY materials is an efficient way to optimize packaging equipment operating. The coatings solve issue of film sticking to the edge-soldering elements, reduce friction on the guideways surfaces, and extend service lifetime of the parts.

The Modengy company offers services on applying anti-adhesive compounds at its Engineering Center, provides consultations on all questions that might arise, and helps to select the appropriate coatings.
