The Modengy company has designed a premium version of an anti-friction solid-film coating for internal combustion engine piston skirts. The new development has been created to solve the tasks where the lowest possible friction, increased protection against wear, and service lifetime that significantly exceeds the standard solutions level are required.

This coating has supplemented the MODENGY materials line that are applied by the method of screen printing. However, it exceeds the existing solutions due to a fundamentally new level of tribotechnical characteristics. The key difference of the premium version is use of graphene, the innovative material that enables to increase efficiency of the coating operating under conditions of high loads, boundary lubrication, and the modes critical for the piston-cylinder group.

According to the tests results, the new material has demonstrated the friction coefficient value of 0.056 at boundary lubrication, according to ASTM G99. This is the best rate among the coatings for ICE pistons that are applied by the method of screen printing: friction coefficient of the previous generation materials was on the level of 0.069 to 0.079 what was 23 to 41% higher than the rate of the new development at comparison of the values.

Service lifetime of the coating has become even a more significant advantage. At dry friction, according to ASTM G99 standard, the premium version of this MODENGY coating showed a result more than 5 to 8 times higher than the one of the previously developed coatings of the same line. Thus, the new development demonstrates completely other level of durability, and opens additional possibilities of application in the high-loaded ICE parts.

Key advantages of the premium version of the coating for ICE piston skirts are:

  • Innovative formula that includes graphene
  • The lowest friction coefficient within the MODENGY coatings line intended to be applied by the method of screen printing
  • Multiply extended service lifetime at dry friction
  • High efficiency under conditions of boundary lubrication, ‘cold’ starting, oil starvation, and increased loads
  • Potential of application in the tasks where standard solutions do not provide required level of reliability

This development has become a continuation of the Modengy’s systemic work on creating highly effective anti-friction coatings for the part of the engines and industrial friction units. The new material exceeds the available solutions by many times in service lifetime, and sets a premium level in the technology of protecting the ICE piston skirts.

This material is currently undergoing final testing at the customers’ and awaiting a model designation and subsequent launch into production. The enterprises interested in application of the new development can get the samples of the coating to carry out their own tests on the items of their own production.
